SmartMark RFID Tags

RFID tags use radio waves for the purpose of tracking and identifying your assets. Whether you need to track metal parts, components in chemical baths, injected molded plastics, palettes, or containers, our rugged RFID tags deliver reliable performance.

Our RFID tags can be custom made and programmed to match your system’s data and are available with your logo and message. With the ability to read longer distances, RFID tags are perfect for marking any mobile object. Our SmartMark series of RFID tags have been fully tested to mark all your challenging applications. With the widest selection of RFID tags available, you have the ability to mark metal and non-metal surfaces with great readability.

Our RFID tags are durable, flexible, abrasion resistant, solvent resistant, and have great read/write performance. These RFID tags can be embedded below the surface in concrete, plastics, fiberglass etc without losing read range. Choose from our wide selection of adhesives to make installing you’re RFID tags simple. With the ability to withstand outdoor weather, harsh environments, and high impact, our selection of RFID tags will be perfect for your most difficult applications.

William Frick specializes in UHF RFID tags and passive RFID tags.  Our Gen2 UHF rfid tags are guaranteed to work with most industry-standard readers.  If you have not already chosen a reader / integrator, William Frick's RFID experts can introduce you to our experienced and tested partners who also specialize in UHF and passive rfid tags.

RFID vs Barcodes Comparison

For many applications, professionals compare the differences between RFID technology and barcodes.  While both have been used to track assets, there are several fundamental reasons why RFID is more suitable for asset tracking.

  RFID Barcode
Read Rate Multiple RFID tags simultaneously be read. Great for yard inventory management. Tags can only be read one at a time.
Line of Sight Not required. Assets can be placed in any orientation and read by RFID scanners without line of sight issues. Required. Barcodes on assets must be in line of sight with the scanner.
Labor Requirements Low labor requirements. Most RFID systems, after setup, can be completely automated. High labor requirements. Someone must scan each individual barcode.
Durability Current RFID tags can be highly durable through encapsulation or embedding in the assets themselves. Good for harsh environments over long periods of time. Low durability because labels are easily damaged. Dirt and grease inhibits read ability.
Security Highly secure data storage format. Data on the RFID tag can be encrypted or password protected. Low security. Anyone with a scanner can read the barcode. Easy to counterfeit.
Proactive Monitoring Alerts can be triggered from many events like removal of assets from a yard. None

Read Write Ability

Data can be securely written and rewritten over 100,000 times None. Once printed, a barcode's information can not be changed.

Passive RFID Tags, April 21 2010

By: Michael

A passive tag is an RFID tag that does not need or have a battery; the reader provides the energy needed to operate the tag. When the reader\'s radio waves are picked up by the passive RFID tag, the coiled antenna within the RFID tag creates a magnetic field. The circuits in the tag are thus energized. The energized passive RFID tag will then transmit the information encoded in memory.

The advantages of a passive tag are:

* Longevity: Functionality not limited by battery charge. Some tags can last up to 20 years.
* Price: Passive rfid tags are typically cheaper to make due to less circuits and the lack of a power supply
* Size: Tags without a power supply are small, some as small as 0.5\".

The disadvantages of a passive rfid tag are:

* Range: Active rfid tags can read at a much longer range than passive tags, but current technology allows for over 30\' read range with passive tags.
* Can not turn off: Passive rfid tags will still read and function long after the asset has been sold or removed or junked. The tag itself has to be destroyed to stop it from reading.

Active RFID Tags, April 21 2010

By: Michael

An active RFID tag requires a battery or other external power source for the tag\'s integrated circuit (IC) and antenna. The enclosed battery can be replaceable or some are inside of sealed units. Some active tags are functional for years.

The battery will energize the RFID tag\'s circuitry, which will then transmit the information inside the IC (or memory).

The advantages of an active rfid tag are:

* It can be read at distances of one hundred feet or more, greatly improving the utility of the device
* By having a power source, the RFID tag can be easily shut off
* There might be enough power to supply additional sensors

The disadvantages of an active RFID tag are:

* Time: The active tag is limited to the power of its battery.
* Cost: Active RFID tags are more expensive than passive RFID tags.
* Size: The power source or battery increases the footprint of the tag
* There can be potential misreads if the battery or power supply is low or weak.

SmartMark RFID Tags Help Us In Shipping, January 24 2011

By: Leo

Since we started using SmartMark RFID tags supplied by William Frick in our inventory control and shipping systems, the improved efficiency of our operations has been a big factor in our growing profitability. We use passive RFID tags in our inventory and warehouse management systems and RFID labels on all of our shipping containers and finished products.

Frick\'s personnel were instrumental in helping us design our first RFID tags, and they continue to help us refine our operations with the latest in SmartMark RFID technology. RFID tags give us much more flexibility in our manufacturing, inventory management and shipping systems than we had when we used traditional optical barcode systems.

RFID Tags Improve Our Security System, February 21 2011

By: Bill

My company stores and transports high value assets that require constant monitoring for security and inventory control purposes. Working with Frick??™s knowledgeable staff, we were able to set up an effective RFID tag system that makes our security tighter and more efficient.

All of our secure areas are monitored by automatic readers that allow access to visitors and employees wearing proper RFID identification tags, but bar access by unauthorized personnel. We use Frick??™s SmartMark RFID tags on all of our high value assets to monitor their movements within our facility and to track them throughout the shipping process.
