LIBERTYVILLE, Ill.— Recognizing the difficulty that first responders can have finding the right home, especially at night, Ontario, California-based Reflect-A Curb® approached specialty printer William Frick & Company about producing highly reflective address tiles that would significantly increase a house number’s visibility from the street.

“The idea for this product came about when I heard that EMTs had been unusually slow in reaching a home where an elderly woman had collapsed,” said Ric Hawthorne, vice president and founder of Reflect-A Curb.  “When they finally arrived on the scene, they confessed that they’d had a hard time finding the right house despite its number being posted in three different places.  It made me realize just how important it was for people to be able to see your house number.  I figured there had to be a way to produce numbers that would be attractive, durable and highly visible.”

Hawthorne approached identification experts William Frick & Company because of their more than 35 years of experience manufacturing labels, decals, signs and tags.

“We took Reflect-A Curb’s basic idea and specifications for high visibility and extreme durability and engineered a few different materials that would work in concert to provide a highly reflective tile,” said Ben Salazar, business development manager of William Frick & Company.  “The tile is made of a flexible yet sturdy plastic topped with a layer of self-healing Urethane for durability. The end result is a product that is bright, colorful, UV stable and extremely reflective.  At 3x5 inches, the tile is big enough to be seen yet not so large that it would be unsightly.”

First responders are letting Hawthorne know that they support well-marked residences.   “In my career with the Houston  Fire Department, I know first-hand that locating an address is not always easy when numbers are obscured, unlit or even just worn away,” said Casey Jacoby, Captain of the Houston Fire Department  (Ret).  “The Reflect-A Curb address system is a fantastic way of helping first responders find your address quickly and easily at those times when every second matters."

“William Frick & Company is proud to produce this product, which has the potential to improve response time by first responders and possibly save someone’s life,” added Salazar.

When attaching Reflect-A Curb tiles to the curb, the homeowner uses a permanent concrete adhesive.  Alternatively, with peel-and-stick adhesive pads the tiles can be attached to house siding, glass, mailboxes and posts using magnets or adhesive strips.  The tiles can be slid into a frame that can be mounted to the house siding or porch rail.  There are also frames with thin steel legs that can be inserted into the lawn.

In addition to the numbers and letters, the Reflect-A Curb system offers Curb Charms® -- decorative tiles with colorful graphics like flags, symbols and ribbons.  Curb Charms can be customized for teams, homeowner associations, scouts and other groups.  Four of the Curb Charm images carry a donation to the affiliated charitable organization.  For example, the purchase of a “Yellow Ribbon” tile will not only signal your support for our troops but also will include a donation to the USO.

Reflect-A Curb products are available for purchase through the company’s online store and as fundraisers to groups such as schools, scouts, church groups and others.    The official website is www.reflectacurb.com, and they can be reached at (909) 218-7821.
